If you’re reading this, you probably know me, which means you know that I am a Michigander living in Berlin, writing backend code and sometimes words depending on the time of day. I’ve done reporting on everything from a bombing, drones, surveillance and police militarization to comedic billboards in the subway and the opening of a new miniature train at my local zoo. (I like trains. A lot.)
My journalism, freelance essays and poetry have appeared in more than 20 publications including VICE, Truthout, The Independent, Sludge, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Fatherly, Jacobin and The Baltimore Sun, where I was a web producer on the newsroom investigative team and shared in an IRE award for skeptical coverage of Baltimore’s police department after the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
(Don’t take me to be some sort of blanket anti-policing zealot, though. I have two law enforcement folks in my family, both of whom I adore. As an editor I admired always said, it’s good to be understanding of individuals and their good motives while being aggressive in investigating systemic failures.)
Now I work as a web developer during the day, playing with languages, writing and feeding my FOIA hobby at night.
